Adopt a River

February 10, 2024

The pioneering initiative known as Community Action for Fresh Water (CAFW) stands as Rotary’s flagship collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This program serves as a catalyst, bringing together Rotary members, local communities, and partners to prioritize the protection, restoration, and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems, all within the broader
environmental context.

Established in 2023, this strategic partnership underscores Rotary’s global commitment to environmental stewardship. CAFW builds upon the successes of Rotary members involved in the “Adopt a River for Sustainable Development” pilot program, integrating
valuable lessons learned while advancing efforts towards the preservation and
enhancement of freshwater ecosystems.

In alignment with this commitment, the Rotary Club of Kolkata Benevolence from District 3291 embraced the noble responsibility of adopting the Jaggatdal River in the Indian Sunderbans. This river, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, symbolizes a vital lifeline for the
region’s ecological balance. The adoption ceremony took place on February 10th, marking a significant step towards the collective goal of safeguarding our precious freshwater resources
